Not feeling so super lately

Well, the boulevard, and the pier, have been quite depressing lately. Unless we go out there and have a really good day soon, this might not last much longer. We barely break even on lunch and gas (and we’re not eating much, I swear! $2.25 pizza!). I don’t know how the other girls out there do it.
I’m almost willing to bet people snipe and decline to tip because they still think someone hires us to be out there. Which really makes no sense. I’ve never thought that. I mean, how would that be possible… have you SEEN some of those costumes? They’re about ready to fall apart. If I was going to hire characters, I’d make sure they weren’t embarrassing me or my business by going out like that. Plus, why would I hire 4 Marilyn Monroes? 3 Jack Sparrows? Doesn’t make any sense.
I love to dress up, and meet other people who love to dress up, and be able to walk around in public in costume… but not when I have bills to pay, credit cards to pay off… traveling to fund… I’ve got to be getting paid for my time. Batgirl too. We aren’t going out there just for the heck of it.
Honestly, I’m just not sure what the next step is. We’ve offered ourselves as models to photographers now, and perhaps that will bring in a little something. We’ve got some amazing costumes in our possession. I’d love to make use of them, and get my money back (seems like my costumes always cost way more than I think they will). I’m supposed to be signing with a new agent soon, but that seems to be taking some time, as well. I’ve had some good auditions, so we’ll see if they lead anywhere.
I AM happy though, because right now I have some free time to sew, and I’ve been wanting to do that for a while. Get creative, sew some new dresses… I want to totally revamp my wardrobe. I’ve been working on that for a while! I sat out by the pool today, and that was relaxing. I need to do that more often, because I worry too much, and work too much on the computer to keep the money coming in.
I’m debating whether or not I want to order a new catsuit. Mine has some issues, and the new one wouldn’t cost that much, but still… I’m wondering how much use it’ll get and if it’ll pay itself back. If money wasn’t an issue, yes, I’d get it. I love costumes and I strive for perfection. We shall see… Back to work now.
Thanks for putting something up. I couldn’t even bring myself to write about this past weekend because it was so lame. 😛
Also, there’s no excuse for the people who are told we work on tips and then laugh and walk away. I hope a train falls on them. Losers.
P.S. Tonight’s episode of The Mentalist started out in front of the Chinese Theatre with a fake Charlie Chaplin and Marilyn, but none of our people were out there. Still, it’s interesting to see how much Hollywood has picked up on, well, the other side of Hollywood lately. That’s a few TV shows that have featured the characters this year alone.
Don’t know if you’re familiar with these, but here are two Los Angeles-based groups that might be worth checking out. I’ve never met any of the people from either group and know them only from the net (like you) so I can’t vouch for them and I can’t tell if you’d fit in with them or not. But it might be worthwhile to make contact and do a little networking. Perhaps they could use a couple of cute actress-designer-creative types with superheroine experience. Or know of others who do. Or maybe there’s a project on which you could collaborate. Or you could all hang out together in L.A. and starve to death. Or something. Just another suggestion.
1. Redcape Cinema:
http://www.redcapecinema.com/redcape_4/main_RC4.htm
This is a filmmaking group that made a couple of well-received Wonder Woman fan films a couple of years ago but mainly does original material. Ron Santiano, the director, is probably the guy to talk to. I notice there’s a lack of non-Asian-American actresses in their work. I can see where they might have a need for costume-designing actresses with ballet and martial arts experience.
2. Lucky Legendary:
http://www.LuckyLegendary.com
This is some sort of lowbrow improv comedy-satire group with a quirky superhero theme. At least two of the regulars (Michelle Prenez and Jennifer Wenger) are Boulevard veterans, having played Supergirl and Wonder Woman there and at various comic book conventions (and on Jimmy Kimmel’s TV show, according to their IMDB entries). The group travels to cons and makes not-that-great satirical videos, among other things. But you might at least try to contact Michelle and Jennifer (who have an improv group of their own) to talk shop.
Life is soooo hard for us “Starving Artists”, I don’t know what else to say!
CL is the WORST place to look for work as EVERYONE there seems to think that adding them to your portfolio REALLY helps us (photographers), and that because we all shoot digital that it costs us nothing??!!
They could not be more wrong!!
If I mention my time or my equipment costs, then I”M the bad-guy????
Anyway, sorry for ranting on your blog, but I just wanted to drop a line to say that for a LONG time, I have been wanting to get away from typical model shoots, and do something DIFFERENT, so in the future (it’ll be a while, so pleeeeaassseee be patient with me), I would love to try something with you!!!
Keep your heads up ladies! Life is hard for us right now (don’t know when it’ll get better), but someday someone will notice 😉
Besides, you are waaaaayyy too beautiful to be sad….especially Bat Girl 😉
You have a new fan!! I will be sure to check you blog out weekly!!!
Hey girls,
How did the Hepburns worked for you guys? Come out this weeknd, should be good, good, good, it’s really picking up. I’m so so sick today, so can’t work, heard though that people saying it’s best day in looong times. Bugga, that I can’t work. Will work this weekend though, ’cause last saturday was awesome1 Made a lot of money by even being out for 2 hours. So keep the spirit!
C ya later!

Hey there!
LOL. It went pretty bad. We each made a dollar. But we got a gig at Cafe Audrey, a little part time thing… we’ll write about it soon. Meg – write about it. Hehe. I will work on video. I’m just having kind of a weird day, and I have a lot of stuff to sort out now…. Why does it seem like when you plan something you’re really excited about, something else has to happen and force you to choose…. and then I have to be the kind of person who thinks “Can I do both…??”
Talk to you later, and I hope you feel better soon!!
